Medicare 101
Understanding your coverage options.
Medicare has four parts — and two main ways to receive your benefits. Here's what each one does.
Medicare Part A
Hospital insurance. Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.
- Inpatient hospital care
- Skilled nursing facility (after hospital stay)
- Hospice care
- Most people get Part A free at 65
Medicare Part B
Medical insurance. Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medically necessary services.
- Doctor and specialist visits

- Monthly premium applies
Medicare Part D
Prescription drug coverage. Sold by private insurers. Covers most brand-name and generic prescription drugs.

A Medigap policy pays some or all of the deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn't cover. You keep your Medicare — Supplement wraps around it. See any doctor who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the country.
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare
Medicare Advantage plans bundle Parts A and B, often include Part D drug coverage, and sometimes add extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. Plans use networks — HMO or PPO — and often have lower monthly premiums.
